VISITOR'S QUESTIONS
8... Softening the Water for Plants

Generally speaking you are quite right to soften the water as well as lower the pH for tetra species, Proper pH is a good choice in this respect. To address your query though, I have checked my own stock of the product and read the instructions in detail but I cannot find any mention that it should not be used if you have live plants.

However, other suggestions for lowering pH could include filtering your water through aquarium quality peat. The peat will release chemicals that will acidify the water and stain it brown, this is a more natural way to reduce the pH , the colouration of the water resembles that of rivers in and around the Amazon Basin.

This seems to suit fishes that originate from the so-called “ Black Water Regions” and could very well compliment a well planted aquarium, especially if Amazonian plants are used, as a theme.

Although some plants can tolerate extremes most prefer a neutral pH range between 6.5 and 7.2 I hope this information is of help to you.
