30... Small Garden Pond With Leeches
I am not really as well up on the pond hobby as I am
with freshwater tropical fishkeeping, even though I have a pond myself.
There are a couple of ideas I can pass on to you though, depending on
which way you want to tackle the problem.
Chemical treatment should be approached with caution.
Copper sulphate, Dimilin, Formalin, can all be used to rid ponds of
snails, however, they can also do harm to other pond life and it is
my opinion that chemicals be avoided where ever possible, formalin especially.
Leeches can also be controlled by introducing Hybrid
Sunfish into the pond, they will eat the leeches.
Hybrid Sunfish are bred by crossing a male Bluegill
with a female Green Sunfish, which produces a 90% male to 10% female
ratio. This keeps the Hybrid Sunfish from over populating, making it
an excellent pond fish.
You could also try baiting your pond with fresh pieces
of meat tied to a string, this will attract the leeches and "capture"
them on the meat, you can then dispose of them as you will.
