VISITOR'S QUESTIONS
13... Platy and Guppy Deaths
It would be impossible for me to give you a specific
reason for your fishes deaths given my lack of knowledge of your particular
setup, all I can do is give you some ideas and point you in the right
direction.
There are many reasons why fish deaths occur in the
aquarium, the majority are due to poor water conditions and/or an unfavourable
environment. It is more than likely that this is the case with your
Platies and guppies, especially as they were in spawning condition.
An important point that is often overlooked is that adults should be
brought into breeding condition before attempting to spawn them.
Correct feeding is essential to health and growth,
today's dry foods are of exceptional quality and can sustain adult fishes
for a lifetime. However, feeding of breeding stock needs to be regularly
supplemented with good live food. There are many other things to consider,
such as the temperature and the quality of your water. Generally speaking
mollies, swordtails and guppies prefer pH 7.0 - 8.0, Slightly Hard Water;
5º - 6ºdH, Temp; 75ºF (24ºC) and clear of pollutants.
Were they being continually pursued by other tank mates
and suffering a stressful environment? I note that you have got a minimal
sized aquarium, is it overcrowded? It is these types of question that
you should be asking yourself, and then checking to see if your aquarium
environment meets the demands for the breeding of your fishes.
I am sorry I cannot be more specific, but it is a very
broad question that you ask, however I hope the information I have given
you has at least shed some light.
