VISITOR'S QUESTIONS
32... Is my Molly pregnant or just fat?
Pregnant molly females grow quite round and are easily
noticed. If you have a variety of molly that is light in colour, you
can see the "gravid spot", a dark spot that appears directly under and
behind the female's belly, a few days before she is going to drop the
fry.
The gestation period of mollies is about 28 days and
the females have the ability to store sperm so that they can produce
several broods of young from one mating. If your molly is dark in colour
you may not see the gravid spot, therefore the only indication may just
be an increase in girth, however, female mollies tend to be more rounded
anyway, so even this may not be conclusive.
Incorrect water conditions can have an effect on the
mollies size, under certain unfavourable conditions mollies may become
bloated thus having a more rounded appearance. Incorrect water conditions
are also a main factor when it comes to breeding, this could be why
your molly is not getting pregnant, although there are many other reasons
also.
