VISITOR'S QUESTIONS
23... Can you keep tropical fish in cold water?

The short answer to your question is no. The very meaning of the word tropical means hot and humid. However, even in tropical climates there are places that have cooler running waters, such as mountain streams.

One popular example of a so called "tropical fish", that can stand cooler temperatures, is the White Cloud Mountain Minnow ( Tanichthys albonubes ), a member of the Cyprinidae family. As its name suggests, it inhabits streams of the White Cloud Mountain, in South China, near Canton. It is an undemanding, but agile little fish that can tolerate temperatures in the 64º - 72ºF (18º - 22ºC) range.

They are a schooling fish and become quite timid and pale when alone. The fish only reaches about 1½ inches (3.8cms) and is undemanding about water quality but cannot tolerate much heat.
