no substrate means the choice of the plants..[Microsorum such as Java Fern, Bolbitis, Anubias] all of them can be attach to rocks or driftwood..no CO2 means you have to do more water changes..actually, the real concept of planted tank was "how to create an ecosystem in an aquarium"..

I heard you dont need any special substrate. i saw a really awesome tank with nothing but gravel.. not even CO2! just search on youtube:"Soccer fish tank community"(make sure you type soccer... it will be the first vid. hope this helps. good luck. i too am planting my tank :D

How often do you clean that tank?? And are you just using normal gravel or do you put the plants in a special substrate?

nice tank but how do u plant the plants? ok i know stupid question im a starter lol but when u buy them do they come in pots? anyway great setup!
