Fishes Catalogue - Tolerant SpeciesFor the beginner it’s best to stick to the more common, hardier “community” species until a little more fish keeping experience has been gained. In general these species will be quite tolerant of the water conditions found in most homes around the UK. Provided regular maintenance is observed, they will be interesting, colourful and live a long healthy life. Tolerant species originate from regions where fishes inhabit small bodies of water that are influenced by heavy rainfall and drought. This has considerable impact on the water’s characteristics, and as a result, fishes of these regions have had to acclimatise themselves to that environment and may become more hardy than many other species. Some fishes can even survive in the muddiest of waters, having developed a special accessory-breathing organ, which enables them to use atmospheric air to supplement their gills. Other species require more specific conditions. These species originate from regions where larger bodies of water, such as the African Rift Lakes, are not easily influenced by external changes, thus enabling conditions to remain stable. In turn these conditions must be replicated in the aquarium, possibly beyond the novices experience. The list that follows is a small example of the many tolerant species that are available. Tolerant doesn't mean that they will take everything that you throw at them; there are general water condition parameters still to be observed, which I have outlined, and as always regular monitoring and maintenance is still essential!!!
These are general parameters that may be tolerable to these species, when you go to a particular species page, please note the conditions that suit that particular species best.
